The above information is published in good faith, using information provided by manufacturers and distributors. In some cases this information has been supplied to GFA by members and is not the result of our own questioning process. It is based on the most recent information that we have access to. We hope it is of use.
Comments, criticisms and questions to research@geneticfoodalert.org.uk

    Brand / Product Notes

Adams Marketing - Adams Marketing have failed to give us any specific assurances about the products they import and distribute. Some Morningstar products in the USA have been found to contain GM soya and a form of GM maize (called Starlink) not yet approved for human consumption. Morningstar products on sale in the UK include: "Streaky Strips", "Back Bacon" and "Spicy Sausage Burgers". GM soya has been found in the "Streaky Strips" at a level that exceeds the E.U. permitted contamination threshold. For technical reasons it hasn't been possible to successfully test for the Starlink maize. 31/3/01

    Amoy - see HP Foods

Andutra - have stated that all products from the following manufacturers meet EU regulation: Aulds, Bolletje, Buitoni, Cansimag, Culinar, Griesson, Gunelsheim, Lady Cake, Loaker, Jacquet, Magdalenas de las Heras, Mestemacher, Poell, Real Foods, Roka, and Wolf. Other manufacturers distributed by Andutra have yet to confirm that they even meet these regulations. This does not constitute an assurance that these products meet GFA Standards, and we have advised members to delist them, in accordance with our policy, until guarantees are received. 5/3/01

Annie's Homegrown - "The area of genetically engineered ingredients is of growing concern to us at Annie's. We have asked all of our suppliers to provide us with detailed statements about the ingredients we purchase from them. Once we receive and review these statements, we will be able to determine if we need to take any action regarding our suppliers." taken from the Annie's Homegrown website. 20/2/01

Barkat - See Gluten Free Foods

Bensons Crisps - Bensons Malt Vinegar flavour crisps are not GM Free. We have been promised a full update on their existing products as well as all new products in July, 2000

    Cavi-Art - See Finlay's Foods

    Certo - See G. Costa.

    Citadelle - See G. Costa.

Clearspring - We have firm guarantees on all Clearspring lines with the exception of their 2 varieties of Ramen, although we now have verbal assurances that these meet our standards. The written assurance is currently being translated into English and we will amend these details as soon as we receive it. 5/2/01.

Coln Valley - See G. Costa.

    Conimex - See G. Costa.

Corn Candies - See De Rit.

    Costa - See G. Costa.

Curry Club - See G. Costa.

    Dairylike Foods - See Haldane

    Dandex - see GR Lanes

DellUgo use 'Chymogen 190' in their vegetarian cheese, which they describe as "derives from but does not contain any Viable or Non-viable Genetically Modified material".They have given us assurances that none of their other products contain or involve GM, although we are unsure at this point of the definition of GM that DellUgo are using.

De Rit - The majority of products manufactured and distributed by De Rit are organic and therefore meet GFA Standards. However we have not received any response from De Rit with regard to the minority of non-organic products. To that end we have no guarantee that these products are GM Free, and recommend that they are avoided until a guarantee is forthcoming. 31/3/01.

    Direct Foods - See Haldane

    Earl Grey's Biscuits - See G. Costa.

Epicure (manufacturer - Petty, Wood & Co) - are "currently reviewing" their GM status and "cannot guarantee (Gordon Smith, Quality Control Manager).

English Grains - See Peter Black Healthcare

Fine Italian Foods have guaranteed only that their products meet the current GM labeling legislation as foods that do not require labeling. As you will be aware, the legislation is very weak, and this guarantee therefore does not meet the current Genetic Food Alert standard of GM Free.

Finlay's Foods responded reluctantly with a guarantee that stated all products were Organic (certified by the Austrian Government). However we have reason to believe this information is incorrect, although we are not in a position to speculate as to how or why we were given incorrect information. Certainly neither the Cavi-Art or Gummi Bears products carry organic certification on packaging or promotional materials. Finlay's have made it clear to us that they consider our questioning to be 'harassment' and we are therefore unable to clarify this situation. In the light of this unsatisfactory conclusion to our research we cannot list these products as meeting our standards.

    G. Costa - have been able to guarantee only the Blue Dragon, Celestial Seasonings and Stamp Collection Vegetable & Sweet Potato Crisps. They have declined to give us detailed information on other lines stating essentially that there are too many products to monitor. All other G. Costa brands must therefore be regarded as failing to meet GFA Standards for GM Free

Geo Watkins - See G. Costa.

Gerard House - See Peter Black Healthcare

Gluten Free Foods - Only the Organic porridge flakes and the new gluten free ice cream cones in the Barkat range can be guaranteed to GFA standards. 22/2/01

    Granforno - See G. Costa.

GR Lanes have issued guarantees on all their food products except Dandex dandelion coffee which they are discontinuing.

    Granose - See Haldane

Gummi Bears - see Finlay's Foods

Halo are unable to guarantee that the sugar syrups and starches used in their products "will always be manufactured from non-genetically modified maize".

Haldane have informed us that "all product produced by Haldane Foods Comply (to GFA standards) excluding those containing maltodextrin or aspartame". (10/7/00). As soon as we have a full list of the affected products we will publish it.

Hardrock Café Veggieburgers - See Adams Marketing

The Handmade Flapjack Company have provided a GFA member with a full list of products. Only their Toffee Cake and Toffee Mega Muffin are listed as not being GM Free.

    Heidelberg - See G. Costa.

    Hero - See G. Costa.

Hider Foods have given us a guarantee on all organic lines and all non-organic dried fruit, nuts, cereals and pulses. However we do not have any information about other products such as confectionery. 3/3/01

Holland & Barrett claim to have responded to our questioning, although no response has been received. Their most recent correspondence states: "We have in place a strict code for GM materials which we expect all our suppliers to adhere to... we are happy that they (Holland & Barrett products) conform to our GM free requirements as stated in our company policy." 20/2/01. However in the absence of any supporting paperwork we cannot regard them as meeting GFA standards.

HP Foods Ltd (alsoRajah, DaddiesandLee & Perrins brands) are part of the Danone Group whose policy statement reads, 'the Danone Group has decided not to use genetically modified ingredients in its products marketed in the European Union, and therefore guarantees the conventional origin of its raw materials. In line with this decision, the Group requires all its suppliers to certify that they respect these rules..' 27/9/00. This guarantee, whilst surprisingly firm, appears to cover only soya and maize and not the numerous other derivatives and processes that may be affected by GM. As such it does not constitute a guarantee to our standards. Nor does it cover animal feed. We have requested further information.

Innes Cheese use "the vegetarian rennet 'Maxiren' which is produced by a genetically modified organism but itself contains no residual GMO"

Joannusmolen UK - See De Rit.

Jordans are guaranteeing all but one of their products. 'Energie' contains an antioxidant of GM origin.

Kettle Chips (Kettle Foods) cannot guarantee the following flavours as GM Free to our standards: Sea Salt and Crushed Black Pepper, Mature Cheddar & Burgundy, Tandoori Masala, French Onion (other flavours are guaranteed, as are Kettle Tortillas and Organic range).

La Bici - See G. Costa.

Linda McCartney Dairylike - See Haldane

Lion are "working towards GMO Free", Martin Muggeridge, Technical Manager

    Mazetti - See G. Costa.

    Mex-Snax - See De Rit.

Mikotu - (Clearspring) A recent statement from Clearspring states that: "Last Friday we have received confirmation from Japan that the producer of Harvest Moon Crackers is unable to confirm GM status of the lecithin. Additionally, he is not able to use an alternative product in the production process. Therefore, we have decided to de-list this product". 5/2/01. All other products under this name meet our standards.

Mon Cuisine was distributed by Foundation Foods - 0208 4201010 - but they say it is no longer distributed in the UK by them or anyone else.

Mr. Bean - (Healthy Sales and Marketing) have now confirmed that all products, organic and non-organic, conform to GFA Standards - 23/3/01.

New Covent Garden Soup Co. cannot guarantee any product containing cheddar cheese. They have stated that "The vegetarian rennet used is derived from naturally occurring micro organism but the process utilises refined soya and maize derivatives of an as yet undetermined genetic origin." All other products are GM Free to GFA Standards.

Nirvana Sugars have given a written guarantee regarding their organic sugars. We have only received verbal assurances about their non-organic unrefined cane sugars. However to the best of our knowledge only sugar beet, and not sugar cane, have been affected by GM technology, and so we have no problem with accepting these assurances.

Nong Shim - See G. Costa.

Old Fashioned Foods - See G. Costa.

Old Ranch House - See G. Costa.

    Olof - See G. Costa.

Pepperidge Farm - See G. Costa.

Peter Black Healthcare - Peter Black Healthcare have chosen not to respond to our questioning, saying that "we have concerns over this initiative...(i.e. Genetic Food Alert)...and have addressed these through our trade associations, CRN and HFMA.". (31st August, 2000). Because of this lack of co-operation, we cannot in any way guarantee that these products do not contain GMOs as defined by GFA.

Picnic Fayre - See G. Costa.

Pogen Krisprolls - See G. Costa.

Quintessential (now Vegetarian World) - New Covent Garden Soup Co.  cannot guarantee any product containing cheddar cheese.

Costa.

    Pogen Krisprolls- See G. Costa.

Quintessential (now Vegetarian World) - Technical manager - Graham Knapton - "we were sent an information request but chose not to reply".

Rakusens cannot, at present, guarantee the soya lecithin in the margarine contained in some of their other products. This affects their Kosher Margarine (Tomor Block/Sunflower); their Kosher biscuit range (Viennese Star/Fruit Shortcake/Fruit Flapjack/Honey Crunch/Ginger Crunch and Choc Chip Cookies); their Beef & Tomato Soup; and their Bean & Bites.

Realeat - According to the Greenpeace website www.greenpeace.org.uk/GM.htm Haldane have given them the following information: "They cannot guarantee that the egg white used in their Realeat VegeBites, Realeat VegeSteak and Realeat chicken and lamb style roasts are from chickens fed on non-GM crops but are committed to using non-GM fed free range eggs as soon as they can find a supplier". See also separate entry for Haldane.

    Sasso - See G. Costa.

    Skippy - See G. Costa.

Sleafords - much of the Sleaford's range has been guaranteed to a member of GFA as GM Free. They also provided a list of those products they did not regard as GM Free. We would suggest contacting them direct for an update (01529 305000). The range they distribute includes Ardress / Adriatica / Hartleys / Chef William / La Palma / La Corbeille / Mickey / Riverdene / Calispa / Ocean Spray/ Emblem / Lutece / Chivers / Ambassador / Fontinella / Sugal / Matil brands.

Smilde Food Group have responded, saying that all their products meet legal labeling requirements, but that they are not at present prepared to divulge whether they also meet Genetic Food Alert standards. It should be noted that they have asked that we do not include their name in any of our lists..." our parent company were not prepared to give the information. We deal directly with our customers and their requirements in developing GM Free food, and in the meantime all our products are legally labelled. we would be happy to give you the information once all our projects in this area have been completed. Until then it is of no benefit to us.." (text from Smilde Food Group reply 24/5/00).

    Snackmasters - See Haldane.

    So Good - See Haldane.

Taylors Mustard - See G. Costa.

Thursday Cottage - the vast majority of Thursday Cottage non-organic products are guaranteed GM Free to GFA Standards. However the following products contain salted butter that does not meet our standard on GM animal feed (i.e the animals may well have been fed feed made from GM crops): Lemon Curd, Lime Curd, Passion Fruit Curd, Banoffee Curd.

    Tipiak - See G. Costa.

    Unisoy - See Haldane.

    Vegetarian Cuisine - See Haldane.

    Vegetarian Feast - See Haldane.

Vinceremos have told us that they do not have any information regarding their non-organic wines & spirits. They are of course able to guarantee all organic lines, and these are clearly marked in their price list (see entry for Vinceremos Organic Wines elsewhere on this database.)

Yves Veggie Cuisine - We have now been informed that Yves products are no longer on the UK market. We will therefore remove them from our database in the near future. 17/6/01. (Yves have now responded and have guaranteed that their soya protein is from identity preserved, non-GM sources. However they are not able to give us any information, at the present, about the other ingredients in their products and cannot therefore list them as GM Free to GFA Standards. Since the UK distributor has not responded to our questioning, we are listing the Canadian address here for your information: Yves Veggie Cuisine, 1638 Derwent Way, Delta, BC, V3M 6R9, Canada. www.yvesveggie.com. E-mail: yvc@yvesveggie.com

    Note regarding Dairy Products

In listing suppliers of dairy products, we have not yet ascertained that all animal feedstuffs are 'GM Free to GFA standards'. This will be dealt with at a later date.
